DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS
Everyone should aim for 3-A-DAY™, that is three servings of dairy a day, as part of a healthy, balanced diet. This will provide approximately 70% of the calcium needed daily. This makes 3-A-DAY™ dairy a very high source of calcium. One glass (250 ml) of milk, 2 small tubs (200 ml) of yoghurt, 200 ml of maas and 2 slices (40 g) of cheese equals one serving of dairy.
Although butter and cream are dairy products, a distinction is made in the dietary guidelines between them and the ‘milk, yogurt and cheese’ food group. Butter and cream are renowned for their delicious taste but due to their higher fat and lower calcium content, the advice is to consume sparingly as part of a balanced diet.
Excluding or limiting dairy products from the diet may compromise intakes of many vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium and iodine. The decision to exclude any food group from the diet should be taken in consultation with a medical expert, such as a registered dietitian.
